A couple of notes about the Palmerston Island picture above. - - - - - First, the picture is of Palmerston Atoll, Palmerston ISLAND -- the only inhabited "island" is the "motu" or small islet that is directly under the palm tree in front of IOTA on the IOTA logo in the picture. - - - - - - Each of the other motus also has a name: Tom's; Cook's; Leicester; Primrose . . . - - - - -Second, Palmerston has been classified for DXCC purposes since 2006 as NORTH Cook Islands. Cook Islands call signs are issued by Telecom Cook Islands on Rarotonga. Contact person is Mr. Katoa Banaba. Katoa is easy to work with :-) Telephone +682 29 680 ext 3283 Fax +682 26 174 www.telecom.co.ck Email: katoabanaba at telecom.co.ck . You will need passport plus your home country license. Can usually be done in person at the Telecom Office (ask anyone) in less than an hour -- occasionally takes a day or two. Cost NZ$20. Palmerston Island has a population of 66 people - 26 children, 30 adults. Electricity (240V) from 6am to noon and 6pm to midnight -- IF the generator is working. NO stores or shops of any kind!!! VERY slow internet within 15 feet of Telecom Shack -- and it is expensive! Land Line Telephones on island -- cost is free on island, 50cents/minute within Cooks, prohibitive internationally. Mobile phone range +/- 100ft from telecom and somewhat erratic! Accommodation is with one of the 3 extended families who will provide very basic accommodation and food. A good place to start for on-island contact is with the Island Secretary: Tere Marsters email: palmerstonoffice@gmail.com. Some island info at http://www.palmerstonisland.net/ . Transportation to Palmerston from Rarotonga contact Keith Christian. http://svsoutherncross.co.nz/ This info correct as of December 2012 BUT - things change fast in the islands. If you are considering a DXpedition to Palmerston -- and it is a LOVELY location from which to operate -- contact me for a "heads up" on Palmerston "local politics and customs" :-) Andy E51AND on 08-Dec-2012
